Numerical Simulations I SS 2017

Computer simulations and scientific data analysis are important tools in modern physics. The lecture covers numerical methods that are at the base of many computational codes from all areas of physics. The lecture will discuss the mathematical background of the methods, in the interactive lab classes the methods will be implemented and used to solve a variety of physical problems. It is the aim of the course to teach the use and implementation of numerical methods in practice.

Covered topics include:
  • Numerical integration and differentiation
  • Boundary-value problems for ordinary differential equations
  • Interpolation
  • Solution of systems of linear equations
  • Initial value problems for systems of ordinary differential equations
  • Fast-Fourier-Transformation
  • Initial value problems for convective and diffusive PDEs
 
Lectures: Tuesdays, 14:30 - 16:30, HS 5J

Labs classes: Final arrangement of groups to be decided on Wednesday (19.4.). Labs start on 25.4.
